Wits Digitisation Centre (WDC) - "Think Today, Preserve for Tomorrow"

The Wits Digitisation Centre (WDC) currently operates from the lower level of William Cullen Library. Since its establishment in 2012, the WDC has played a crucial role in capacity building within the GLAMs sector and has continuously enhanced its expertise in the field of digitisation.

The Centre aims to position itself as a cornerstone for preserving the University's intellectual property and the nation's cultural heritage.

This mission is driven by a commitment to prevent incidents like the devastating fire at UCT's Jagger Library in April 2021. It embodies the Centre's motto, "Think Today, Preserve for Tomorrow". By fulfilling this role, the Centre ensures perpetual accessibility to digital records, fostering opportunities for education, research advancement, and lifelong learning.

Equipped with extensive capabilities, the Centre specializes in digitising a wide array of formats including bound and unbound documents, books, manuscripts, microfiche, microfilm, film, glass plates, artifacts, fabrics, maps, photographic prints, among others.

The following LibKey services are now available.

Libkey.io is a landing page where researchers can connect to millions of library-subscribed and open access articles using a DOI or PMID.  To get started, go to Libkey.io or search below:

LibKey Discovery organically integrates the power of LibKey in your discovery system. Users benefit from one-click access to content, being able to view the complete journal issue from where the discovered article is from, and seeing cover images from over 22,000 journals. Wits Library users can see the LibKey Discovery results in searches done from the Library web page, look out for the cover images, “View Now”, “Article Page” and “View in Context” links, which will automatically display during the trial period.

• Download BrowZine: From your Android, iOS or Kindle Fire device, visit the Apple App Store, Google Play Store or Amazon App Store. Search for “BrowZine” and download the app to your device. (If you have previously been using BrowZine with our Open Access library, please delete the app and reinstall it.)
• Access BrowZine: First ensure you are connected to the Wits network. Next, tap on the app icon to open BrowZine. A list of libraries will appear, please select University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) and tap Continue to enter the library. You’ll be prompted to login with your Library Account.
• Start browsing! Use the Subject dropdown menu to browse by subject categories or our Titles A-Z to find a specific title by name.
