Wits joins International Institute for Environmental Studies
-
The agreement marks a significant step in strengthening global environmental research collaboration.
The International Institute for Environmental Studies (IIES) is an international consortium of over 20 leading universities and research institutions that support academic and research enterprises in environmental science, environmental management, and sustainability studies. The Institute fosters collaboration through workshops, graduate student forums, and joint research initiatives that bridge geographical and institutional boundaries.
Professor Craig Sheridan, who holds the Claude Leon Foundation Chair of Water Research and directs the Centre in Water Research and Development (CIWaRD) at Wits, emphasised the importance of this partnership in addressing South Africa's pressing water challenges.
He highlighted how the IIES's focus on graduate student collaboration provides invaluable opportunities for the next generation of environmental leaders to engage in international research partnerships.
Wits will host the IIES's 9th Annual Science & Policy Workshop and International Graduate Student Forum in April 2025. This will be the first time these flagship events are held in South Africa, positioning Wits as a key hub for environmental research collaboration in the region.
This partnership aligns with Wits's commitment to addressing critical environmental challenges through international collaboration and knowledge exchange, while contributing to global efforts in environmental science and sustainability research.
